Addictions Counseling Certificate

Christians and their Counselors must consider the place of Scripture in their thinking. Does it provide oversight for everything? When talking about addictions, Scripture is too often put next to AA rather than over it. The clinical “disease model” of addictions and depression supersedes Scriptural oversight.

Commonly diagnosed psychiatric diseases labeled bi-polar, depression, chemical imbalance, A.D.D., are very often present in those who have been physically, mentally, and spiritually damaged by their addictions. Using powerful drugs as treatment on those who have addictions can worsen the problem. Scripture has much to say about these life problems as well.

Christian counselors must come to understand that the thing which drives addictions is found in every human heart — not just the addicted heart. That “thing” is sin. The addict must be taught to take responsibility and not shift blame. Scripture tells us that there is no room in heaven for the drunkards and idolators. Scripture does not tell us that there is no room in heaven for those with diseases such as cancer or heart disease.

This course will reveal to the counselor the richness and relevance of Scripture in dealing with these all-too-common life-defeating behaviors. It promises to revolutionize the Christian counselors methods and even give the counselor God’s strength for the journey.

Included Courses:

CC 721—Addiction Counseling

Are addictions sin or disease? This study reveals the scriptural answer to that volatile question. Edward T. Welch, M.Div., Ph.D., destroys the myth that addiction is a disease. The disease model of addiction counseling has taken over the treatment of addictions. This model only instills hopelessness in the addict. Scripture reveals the addict’s true condition: a worship disorder. The cure for addictions is the same as the cure for idolatry. Victory is found only in Jesus! Amen? D.L. Moody shares many true-life stories of overcomers that came to experience a joy-filled life that God has made available to all Christians.

CC 611—Counseling the Depressed

Depression is likened to a stubborn darkness. Edward T. Welch, M.Div., Ph.D., uses God's Word to give light for the path to the depressed and those who counsel them. Depression and Bi-polar Disorder are two of the most common diagnoses' given by psychiatrists today. Powerful drugs are prescribed for treatment. Is it possible that God has a divine prescription for treatment? We know the joy of the Lord is the Christian's strength, but sometimes it seems so illusive. Teaching by Charles Spurgeon is paired with Edward T. Welch's research to help show how to receive joy that will remain despite the struggles and trials of daily living.

CC 312 —God's Strength for Life's Journey

What do you do with the bumps on the path of life? Climb on them. God doesn’t remove the stones and straighten the path because the bumps are what you can climb on! If you are carrying emotional baggage, you’ll need to set it down to climb. Else it will weigh you down with guilt, pain, and inner suffering. Emotional baggage becomes bondage. Jesus came to proclaim liberty to the captives and set at liberty those who are oppressed. Learn how to receive and use God’s strength for the journey of life. Become equipped to guide others in their discovery of liberty in Christ. Dr. Charles Stanley and Warren Wiersbe divide the Biblical principles for this course.
